Our History

Nichols Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church has been a cornerstone of the Ensley community in Birmingham, Alabama for generations. Founded on the principles of the AME Church — freedom, faith, and fellowship — our congregation has faithfully served the spiritual and practical needs of our neighbors.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1816 by Bishop Richard Allen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, making it the first independent Black denomination in the United States. Nichols Temple carries forward that proud legacy of faith and social justice in the heart of Birmingham.

Through decades of change, our church has remained a place of refuge, renewal, and community. We have celebrated milestones, mourned losses, and grown together as a family united by our shared faith in Jesus Christ.

Our Pastor

Dr. Rev. Raymond Mayes

Senior Pastor

Dr. Rev. Raymond Mayes serves as the Senior Pastor of Nichols Temple AME Church, bringing a deep commitment to biblical teaching, community engagement, and spiritual growth to our congregation.

Under his leadership, Nichols Temple has continued to grow in faith and outreach, strengthening our ministries and deepening our ties to the Ensley community and the broader Birmingham area.
